最近在研究翻译，然后发现了一个现象。

基本所有的中文媒体在翻译中国大陆的时候都是用的Chinese mainland，但是我去看西方媒体的报道时，几乎很少看到Chinese mainland这个表达，而是用的Mainland China。

这两个表达到底有没有区别？

为什么两方媒体在一个词的翻译上达不成统一呢？

我们来研究一下吧。

1. “中国大陆”英语怎么说？

首先划重点：

作为中国人，推荐的用法肯定是：Chinese mainland。

Chinese作为形容词的时候表达：中国的，中国人的。

而mainland，我们先看看它对应的英文意思：

You can refer to the largest part of a country or continent as the mainland when contrasting it with the islands around it.

mainland就表示一个国家或者大陆（continent）最大的一块，通常与这个说法相对的就是它周遭的岛屿。

所以用mainland指代大陆是很适合的说法，正好对应中国两岸的地理关系。

而Chinese mainland宣示了主权，中国的大陆对应中国的岛屿。

那看看在中方媒体报道中，它是如何被搭配的吧：

① On the Chinese mainland, its sales totaled 62,594 in 2019。

在中国大陆，其销量于2019年达到62,594。

② Cosmetics and department stores are likely to remain lackluster, due to a drop in mainland tourist arrivals.

由于大陆游客数量的下降，化妆品和百货商店可能会继续不景气。

lackluster 毫无起色的，缺乏活力的。remain lackluster表示生意像一潭死水，毫无波澜。

直接省略Chinese，知道mainland就是表示大陆。

2. 西方媒体会怎么说？

但是如果是西方媒体，你很少会看到他们使用Chinese mainland。

就算国外引擎搜索Chinese mainland，它也会帮你自动修改成mainland China。

那mainland China和Chinese mainland到底有没有本质上的不同呢？

我们看一段英文解释。

So linguistically speaking, there's no difference between 'mainland China' and 'the Chinese mainland', both of which mean 'the part of China that is on the mainland' or 'the mainland of China'.

从语言学角度来说，mainland China 和 Chinese mainland 都可以表示中国大陆的意思。

While from a political perspective, people who adopt 'mainland China' can indicate their political stance (there are two Chinas) through the use of the term.

但是如果从政治学角度来说，使用mainland China的人可能会有两个China这种政治观点。

所以老外可以辩称Mainland China是语言学角度没有其他意思，但是内心可能暗戳戳是支持两个China的。

这就是为什么：作为中国人，中国大陆不要说成“Mainland China”!

记得说成Chinese Mainland! Chinese Mainland! Chinese Mainland！
